COMPOUND CROSSBOWS

What’s the difference between a crossbow and a compound crossbow?

The principal difference is that the limbs of a compound crossbow are usually much stiffer than those of an ordinary crossbow. This limb stiffness makes the compound crossbow more energy efficient than other bows, but the limbs are much too stiff to be drawn comfortably with a string attached directly to them as in an ordinary bow.

Therefore, the compound crossbow has the string attached to the pulleys, one or both of which has one or more cables attached to the opposite limb. When the string is drawn back, the string causes the pulleys to turn. This causes the pulleys to pull the cables, which in turn causes the limbs to bend and thus store energy.

Compound crossbows
generally use only pulleys that are both round and concentrically mounted, in order to capture the maximum available energy from the relatively short draw length.

CROSSBOWS

October 19th, 2009 jmichel1 No comments

crossbow Although crossbows were mainly used for military defense purposes and hunting centuries ago, today they are mainly used as a sport in target shooting and hunting in a few states of the USA, as well as parts of Asia, Australia, and Africa. Personally, I also happen to think that they make for a nice weapon as a personal defense tool, where guns are prohibited or hard to get.

A crossbow is basically a bow mounted on a stock with a mechanism to hold and release the drawn bow and string. Because crossbows have a shorter draw length than a normal bow, they need a greater amount of draw force to store and release the same energy or force. While crossbows appear to be legal without any constraints in most countries, it is best to check with your local state regulations.
